Switch: Volume 1
June 16, 2008
So I picked up the first volume of Switch, and I have to say, it’s not bad. It seems a bit slashable in my opinion (where are the women?), but Naked Ape is made up of two women that also write BL doujinshi, so it isn’t surprising that it gives me the impression that fangirls will like it…

Switch is about two new investigators working for the Narcotic’s Control Division (and what happens to them, obviously).
One of them is Kai, who is pretty naive. I really don’t get him and his job, seeing as he detests pain (inflicting and receiving). The most interesting thing about him is probably that he nearly killed someone while on the job (after going through some personality mutation). Luckily for him, Hal (Haru) stopped him. So, in a nutshell, he’s the pure, pacifistic new addition to the work force doubling as a killing machine. Hurrah.
The other guy is Hal. There’s not enough of his personality shown so far, so I don’t really get him. He seems to hate Kai, think he’s useless, and never smile around him. He seems really grumpy all the time, however, he smiles sometimes in front of people related to drugs or to himself. Hopefully there will be more of his personality shown in volume two.
All in all, it’s off two a good start. It’s a bit hard to tell the characters apart when you first read (which I usually can’t endure), but it gets easier as you go. It isn’t the best manga in the world by any means, but its engaging, and I rather like it. If you read it, it is definitely not a waste of your time.
